Consolidating the content of websites can provide substantial benefits. For users it can improve discoverability (through better search, grouping of content based on audience needs, consistent navigation) and more consistent and authoritative content (through better processes and resourcing).

The benefits of a consolidation or decommissioning process may take some time to be realised, as new technology is embedded, content migrated, and customer feedback is collected.

There should be reporting back to the agency governance body and to stakeholders throughout the consolidation process, showing:

  • Achievement of the key performance indicators (as per the business case)
  • Progress against the consolidation implementation plan
  • Issues or obstacles still to be addressed
  • Feedback from stakeholders.

The website should be monitored on a regular basis to ensure effective delivery of e-government services, and so that it aligns with agency business needs and whole of government principles.

Why Must I?

There are no mandatory Australian Government requirements for this topic. However, the 2006 e-Government Strategy targets a reduction in the number of government websites, to make it easier for citizens to find information.
