Governance

Online Governance is the process of regulating the operation of an online environment. It includes the specifications of guidelines, roles and responsibilities for web creation, management, decommissioning, content creation and archiving.

There is a strong international web governance movement that looks at the mechanisms to regulate access to the internet for global citizens such as domain name governance and internet governance.

At an agency and departmental level, online governance plays a role in coordinating the creation of content, shared use of web and content applications and the quality management and release of websites to the gov.au domain.

Why Must I?

Under the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997 and the Commonwealth Authorities and Companies Act 1997, a CEO is required to manage the affairs of the agency in a way that promotes proper use of Commonwealth resources.

The body responsible for domain name governance is the Ministerial Online Council, which operates as the peak ministerial forum across governments for consultation and coordination on the information economy:
